What is a foley artist ?
Foley artists are a vital part of the film industry even though they don't normally have much recognition they are the people who record sound effects for films . They normally use certain objects to make certain sounds that normally either cannot be done because they might not have the same effect or they might not be possible to record . Being a foley artist is a hard job it's not just about being creative but also using physical force to get a certain sound.
Advantages of using real sounds than using digital sound fx
- Creates more realistic sound
- Has more impact on the spectator
- Syncs in better with the visuals
How are the sounds made ?
Foley sounds are made from using objects that may make a similar or a sound that would suit a certain action in the film. For example if I wanted to do a braking bone sound effect I could crunch celery record it and put it over the video. Normally sounds are made by the live action playing in the background and the foley artist using objects to make sounds they need.
What does it take to become a foley artist?
To become a foley artist is more than just creating sound but having a huge imagination to think of sounds that would suit certain actions in a film. Foley artists also have to use physical strength which makes the job even more difficult.

In the video above they talk about the sound of stars wars book and how the sounds are made for the franchise of Star Wars. One of the sounds they made from foley sound was the laser gun sound which was made by touching wires from a radio tower which made the laser sound.
Also to make the sound of the walk for the imperial walker character they used sound from a metal factory which cut heavy strong metals with some adjustments later on.
