The sequence I analysed was from a film Submarine by Richard Ayoade. In the sequence the boy is writing a letter to a girl to apologise for pushing her into a puddle.
The purpose of the music in the clip is to create a mood for the spectator and to tell them what is happening. It's also to tell and create more of a character bio for the spectator to tell them what the character is feeling and what he is like. I think the music is also made to not give much away which links into his character who hasn't made up his mind yet on who he is because he hasn't found out yet so he is kind of confused.
The sequence also uses a voice over which shows his thinking after the incident. The purpose of the voice over gives the viewers more detail in the mind of the character which allows them to get more attached to the character and have sympathy for his actions.
ELEMENTS
The background music is non-diegetic and includes such elements as violin and woodwind which create a calm atmosphere to the audience. This is important as it reflects the mood the letter he is writing is in and it also reflects how he feels.
Normally, instruments in the wind family are great for create a mystical and unsure type of feeling for the spectator which would suggest that the music is trying to reflect the main characters feelings.
MEANING
I think that the meaning that the music creates is to show that the characters is trying to find himself in what he is . I think this because the music is on going and it's not music that can be outdated at any point in time.Music doesn't really have to much emotion which I think the letter he is writing reveals which also suits in well with the rest of the sequence.
