The 180 degree rule is used when two different characters are talking . It is used so the audience are orientated to what is happening in the film . If it's broken the film may not make sense to the viewer and may get them confused .
If the rule is broken on purpose the transition must be shown to the viewer so it shows them where the camera is rather than just cutting from one side to another without any kind of camera movement to show it .
